Connecting a gas appliance isn’t like plumbing in a washing machine — it involves pressurised, combustible gas, and the law is strict about who can do it. Here’s what to know before your new appliance arrives.
Why this always needs a Gas Safe registered engineer
- It’s a legal requirement, not a preference. Only engineers on the official Gas Safe Register may connect a domestic gas appliance — doing it yourself is a criminal offence.
- Incorrect fitting risks gas leaks and carbon monoxide. A poorly sealed joint or misaligned connection isn’t always obvious, but it can be lethal.
- Manufacturer warranties usually require proof of Gas Safe installation. Fit it yourself, or use someone unregistered, and you can invalidate your appliance warranty before you’ve even used it.
- Working gas pressure needs to be measured and set correctly. Too low or too high, and burners won’t perform as they should — or won’t combust cleanly.
- Ventilation has to be checked, not assumed. Kitchens need enough air supply for the appliance you’re installing, which varies by room and appliance type.
Why we don’t recommend the popular online shortcuts
| The online advice | What actually goes wrong |
|---|---|
| “Just use the flexible hose that came with it” | Connecting that hose to your gas supply is still gas work under UK law — only a Gas Safe registered engineer may legally do it, whatever hose is involved. |
| “It’s just like plugging in any other appliance” | Gas appliances need a tightness test, correct working pressure, and a flame supervision check before they’re safe to use — none of which a straightforward connection covers. |
| “Skip the certificate, it’s just a hob” | Without a Gas Safe commissioning record, your appliance warranty can be refused outright if anything goes wrong later. |
| “Reposition the appliance and reuse the old pipework” | Moving a cooker or hob usually means altering gas pipework, which needs its own soundness test — again, engineer-only work. |
Before your engineer arrives
- Check there’s at least 750mm clearance between hob burners and any cooker hood above
- Make sure the gas isolation valve near the appliance or at the meter is accessible
- If you’re on a prepayment gas meter, make sure there’s enough credit for us to test and light the appliance
- Have a nearby socket available if your appliance needs power for ignition
What it costs to get it wrong
An unregistered or DIY gas connection isn’t just illegal — it’s one of the few mistakes in a home that can be genuinely dangerous, and it usually voids your buildings insurance and appliance warranty at the same time. A fault that isn’t caught by a proper tightness test and commissioning check can go unnoticed until it becomes a much bigger problem. Getting it done properly the first time, with a certificate to show for it, avoids all of that.

We offer same-day and next-day appointments across Westminster. Call 020 7183 4810 to book a convenient time.
Can I connect a gas cooker myself using the hose it came with?
No — it’s illegal under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 for anyone other than a Gas Safe registered engineer to connect a gas appliance, whatever hose is supplied.
Will you remove my old appliance?
Yes — we safely isolate, disconnect and cap the old supply, and can take the old appliance away on request.
Do I get a certificate afterwards?
Yes — an official Gas Safe installation certificate and a completed manufacturer benchmark record, which protects your appliance warranty.
Can you move my hob or cooker to a new position in the kitchen?
